Although it rained for 3 of the 4 days I was there, the last day I got to venture out to Cabarete Beach on the coast northeast of Santiago. There I got a few photos of one of the best spots in the world to go kiteboarding, an absolutely amazing sport. On the drive there, we went through the mountains where I saw some of the Dominican’s most beautiful countryside . Also, I was able to photograph the Villa Limon, where I stayed in Santiago.

My assignment was to photograph the making of cigars for a company that wanted to update their marketing photography and website. I have to say that this was one of my most unique and interesting assignments. And it was a nice break from photographing white dresses. Although I love weddings, the textures and grittiness of the cigar factory was a photographers dream. Here are the highlights.

We started out at the The Casa Marina Resort which was right around the corner from The Reach Resort, which was where we were staying. The Casa Marina Resort resort had a beautiful lobby with plenty of natural light. There was also a beautiful row of palm trees that lead to the beach and pier. We then went into town. Our first stop was at the court house where the officially signed the marriage papers. We then ended up at The Martini Bar on Duval Street where we shot a few photos inside the lounge area that gave the photos a more modern look and feel. After we took a break, and of course had a drink, we ran into the first wave of guests that came in for the wedding.

Kristin Artz of Swankey Events took care of all the details while Melanie did her hair and make-up in her room, which overlooked the beach venue. The wedding took place just before sunset, which allowed for a romantic mood yet I still had plenty of light to work with in capturing all the details and emotions. I really loved photographing this wedding, because it was so intimate. I felt over the course of the extended weekend that I was able to get to know just about everyone of the approximate 50 guests.

The reception was a casual barefoot event. With the setting sun, Melanie & Ward and their guests enjoyed tropical cocktails, dancing, a conga line and even a limbo contest. Everyone, including myself, had an absolute wonderful evening.

The West Virginia couple decided to go to Mexico to get married in front their family and friends. The intimate destination wedding was held at the beautiful El Dorado Royale Spa & Resort on the Mexican Riviera Maya, just 25 miles south of the Cancun International Airport near Playa del Carmen. Lani & Curtis exchanged their vows in the Resorts’ Gazebo in front of approximately 25 guests. Photos followed on the beach.
